- FEV, Inc.: Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Author: Hamza Derbas, Project Engineer, FEV, Inc.
Abstract: Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have gained significant attention recently due to their ability to combine the benefits of standard electric/ hybrid electric vehicles with the benefits of low grid power costs, compared to petroleum-based fuels. In general, a PHEV operates in one of three modes: charge depletion, charge sustaining and grid charging. In this presentation, the intricacies of these operating modes will be discussed, as well as the tools, methods, and processes used to develop efficient overall control strategies.
In addition, this presentation will address the advantages of using state-of-the-art hybrid powertrain and electric motor test cells in conjunction with diverse development and prototyping tools offered by dSPACE to validate the performance of the control strategies, as well as the durability of the hybrid powertrains and electric motors. Moreover, this presentation will cover the progression from cell testing to real-world in-vehicle testing, calibration, and optimization to deliver an end product that exceeds customer expectations.
